Like Horror films?

...You better do if you live here, and at all frequent the cinema here. They're going horror movie mad here (they being Hollywood, or something). In the latter half of last year we had The Exorcist: The beginning, Open Water, Saw, The Forgotten, The Grudge and Blade Trinity but this year already has seen and we will be seeing this lot...
The Darkness, Hide and Seek, The Boogeyman, Alone in the Dark, Constantine, Cursed, The Jacket, The Ring 2, Dark Water, The Amityville Horror, House of Wax (featuring Plaster of Paris Hilton, surprisingly not as one of the wax work dummy's in the film), The Cave and The Corpse Bride (admittedly this is an animation, but still might be scary...maybe).

Just as well I like these films then! But I bet half of 'em are crap. Speaking of which, I just got to see Open Water at the weekend. What a let down that was. Probably a victim of it's own hype as well as not having the cinema effect watching it at home, but bugger all happens. It got a little intense around the stormy bit (for 5 minutes), but it should have been intense pretty much all the way through. I didn't really like the 'home-movie' style opening, where we see snippets of what this couple are up to, including a bit where you see them naked when they go to bed, which came out of nowhere! And to be honest, unnecessary, but the nature of the film should mean kids aren't watching anyway, though gran my be offended. There's a bit of French language too, but that's understandable, being left behind in the ocean with sharks nibbling at yer toes. Anyway, I thought this was much like A Perfect Storm... also 'based on true events' but leaves you thinking, 'no it's not.' Thinking about it, A Perfect Storm was better... and we know what I think of that film. In fairness, Open Water is actually completely fictitious, but uses this 'based on real events' to real you in (ha, 'real' ... fishing... tenuous) and makes you think 'Wow, this happened to someone?!' but it didn't, which really lets me down and therefore think the film is pants. When the film ends you'll know it didn't happen to someone. But I watched the Making Of on the DVD and it says how the guy read some news stories about people being eaten by sharks when left out at sea, and that's where the reality of the film ends. The writer/director just used it as inspiration, like the Peter Pan story was inspired by the kids and that that J.M. Barrie hung around with, but it's not, and nor did they try and tell us it was 'based on true events.' *humf* Maybe it'd be better to watch if you already know its as made up as Star Wars (sorry to break that to you).

Open Water: A Perfect Storm is better. Ouch. Never thought I'd use A Perfect Storm in a positive manor.
